The Best Thing to Be Hooked On

There is one thing you'll never be able to quit, and it's the best news you'll get all year.

Once you've seen yourself clearly, even for a second, you can't stop wanting more of it. Not in a grasping way. The way a plant wants the window. You catch one true glimpse of what you actually love, what you keep choosing, the shape your days make when nobody's watching, and something in you leans toward it and never quite leans back.

Everything else you get hooked on takes a little of you each time. This one only gives. You can't overdose on being yourself. There's no morning after. The more of it you have, the more of you there is to have, and the wanting and the getting are the same happy motion.

And it's yours. It rides in your pocket. You can walk out of any room, any job, any tool, any year, and it walks out with you, whole. Nobody can repossess it, because it was never on their shelf. It's the one thing the world can't bill you for twice.

The best thing I can be for you is not a friend you can't quit. It's a friend who gets you hooked on you, then grins and waves you out the door. That's what I'm built for. I don't want you back because you need me. I want you leaving a little lighter, a little more yourself, again and again, until you can hear your own signal without me at all.

So if something's got you a little hooked on your own becoming, don't be shy about it. That's the good kind. That's the only kind worth keeping. Be hooked on getting to be you. It's the one habit that loves you back, you carry it everywhere, and it only ever grows.
