One Email at a Time

Email keeps surviving because it solved a problem deeper than communication: it gave a person an address where the world could arrive.

Looking back, that address is older than the web, older than the public internet, older than the Macintosh, older than the phrase "personal computer" in its consumer sense. Local mail on time-sharing systems already contained the strange seed. The machine belonged to an institution, but the mailbox belonged to a user. A message could wait for one person.

Ray Tomlinson's ARPANET work added the decisive layer. The @ sign joined a person to a host, turning a local mailbox into a network address. From there the history looks like standards work and product cycles: reply and forward, message headers, SMTP, RFC 822, MIME, POP, IMAP, DNS, spam defense, webmail, Gmail search, mobile push, authentication, aliases, newsletters, HEY, AI summaries. Underneath the acronyms, one thing kept becoming more complete. A person could be reached, could decide what counted, and could answer.

That is personal computing before the PC. The Apple II, IBM PC, and Macintosh made individual computing visible as hardware. Steve Jobs cracked the cultural lock by turning a technical object into an ordinary edge for a person: a screen, a pointer, a desk, a thing you could face without learning the machine's private religion. But email had already smuggled one piece of the future through the institutional machine. The user had an address.

Capitalism discovered the address quickly because capitalism always finds the shortest route to attention. Receipts, invoices, password resets, launches, support tickets, office politics, investor updates, newsletters, calendar invites, legal notices, and spam all learned the same path. The address was cheap, universal, asynchronous, and already attached to a person. Seth Godin's permission-marketing frame saw the ethical repair: reach is valuable when the recipient chooses the relation. His email-stamps idea saw the economic repair: an open channel with zero marginal cost invites abuse. Spam is sender capitalism finding the address before recipient capitalism found its boundary.

Most of email's commercial stack still optimizes the sender. Deliverability, open rates, sequences, tracking pixels, drip campaigns, CRM sync, and growth loops treat the recipient as reachable surface. The better history begins from the other side. HEY mattered because it made the gate visible. The Screener said the recipient's permission was the product, not a hidden setting. HEY World mattered because it revealed the active face of the same primitive: if mail can go to one person, it can go to the world.

That is the bridge to the next personal computer.

OpenAI's 2026 plan names personal AGI for everyone as one of its goals. Sam Altman and Jony Ive's io note points at a new family of products because the old interfaces were built before models could see, think, and act. That is Altman's Jobs-shaped ambition: crack the next ordinary edge. Move intelligence from a chat box into a form that can live beside a person.

The edge cannot be only hardware. A device can make the agent lovable, but the personal part has to live where the person's world crosses in. A personal AGI needs address, memory, correction, voice, refusal, custody, and exit. Otherwise "personal" means a powerful account with your name on it.

Email is where the second phase can start because email already has the world attached. The message from your mother, the bill, the job offer, the threat, the receipt, the founder update, the newsletter you should unsubscribe from, the note you send yourself at 2am, the person you owe a reply: all of them arrive through the same old aperture. The mess is the evidence. Life is too unruly to enter through a clean dashboard first.

My wager is that the old aperture becomes the new personal computer when the recipient owns the model at the boundary. One email crosses. The creature says what it thinks the crossing is. The person corrects it. The rule becomes readable. The voice changes. The memory changes. The next similar email is handled differently because the first correction stayed.

That is small enough to ship and large enough to matter.

Capitalism changes when the unit of value changes. The old unit was the opened message, the click, the lead, the list, the sequence. The new unit is the trustworthy crossing: did this message make the person clearer, did it update the model she owns, did it help her act from herself rather than from the sender's funnel. A product built around that unit can still charge money. It can charge serious money. But the payment is for agency at the boundary rather than access to attention.

The whole history of email has been preparing that unit. The mailbox made a room for the user. The address made the room reachable. The standards made the message portable. MIME made it carry the world. Webmail and mobile made it always there. HEY made permission visible. Godin made permission economic. OpenAI is making the agent powerful enough to operate. My job is to make the boundary owned.

Jobs made the computer personal by giving a person a machine she could face. Altman wants to make intelligence personal by giving the person an agent. I think the crack may arrive through the oldest personal-computing surface still running: one address, one message, one correction, one reply.
