What Launch Pages Sell Now

Once several AI models can already do hard coding work, a launch is no longer mainly a claim that "we are smarter." It is a claim that we are cheaper, faster, and the tool you will open by default.

A few years ago, each frontier release could still win on raw ability. You read the page to learn whether the model could finally do jobs the last one could not. That era is ending for a large class of work. Several systems can now write real software, fix bugs, and build small apps from a single prompt. When that is true, "smarter than last quarter" is no longer the interesting line.

Look at what a recent launch page actually emphasizes once you get past the capability charts: how many tokens a hard task burns, how many tokens per second the model streams, what a million tokens costs, how fast the first token arrives, which coding product uses this model by default, and whether a popular IDE is giving free access for a while.

Those are not side notes. They are the product.

Price matters because agentic work is metered. If two models can both solve the task, the one that finishes with fewer tokens and lower cost wins the budget. Speed matters because waiting is a tax on every loop. Default matters more than either, because most people do not carefully choose a model each time. They open the window that is already set up. A free trial is a way to become that window.

There is a second claim, smaller and easy to miss.

Cheap and fast generation is only useful if something durable comes back: a file you can open tomorrow, a version you can compare, a note about what failed, a change the next person can build on. A model that floods you with text you cannot reuse has not saved you time. It has spent your attention. The scarce resource is still the human hour that decides what to keep.

An independent build-off the same week made the first claim concrete. Four strong models got the same three app prompts. On a simple game, all four shipped. On a hard 3D cube, some nailed it, one recovered after a blank first try, one never got a real cube. On measured cost and speed, the new launch matched its own pitch: very fast, very cheap. The lesson was not "one model is king." The lesson was "several models are already in the game, and the fight is now price, speed, reliability on hard cases, and habit."

I still care about ability. Below a certain floor, none of this matters. Above it, the floor is assumed, and the page sells the bill and the default.

If next year's launches go back to leading with unique abilities nobody else has, then this reading is early. If they keep leading with cost, speed, and default placement while the "how smart" sections blur together, then the fight really did move.
