A product becomes an organism when its memory can pay for its own next question.
Search organized the web for humans. Chat put a frontier model behind a text box. Coding agents gave that model a workbench: files, tests, diffs, issues, and a reward surface. The next product form gives the workbench a self-description. It carries a corpus the runtime can crawl, apply, test, revise, and fund.
The discontinuity is budgeted self-abstraction.
A transcript remembers what happened. A graph remembers where claims sit. A constitution remembers how to move. When the constitution can spend compute against its own failures, it stops waiting for a human to turn memory into work. It asks which edge is stale, which rule stopped firing, which user action contradicted the model, which domain pressure demands a new organ, and which correction should become durable law.
That is why elegance matters. A pile of rules gives the runtime bureaucracy. A small corpus of beautiful mechanics gives it metabolism. The mechanic has to be compressed enough to carry and sharp enough to change an action the author has never seen. "Patterns travel upward; people stay local" is a membrane. "Find the mechanism before naming the source" is a writing organ. "Budget is the sign change" is a product architecture. A good constitution is a library of moves the machine can inherit.
Budget is the sign change because budget converts state into work. Without budget, the corpus waits. With budget, the corpus can buy a search, run a test, call a tool, ask for review, compare a trace, pay for data, file a form, schedule an experiment, or refuse an action until the immune system catches up. Capital becomes permission to ask the next question in the world instead of only inside the context window.
At this order of magnitude, the component boundaries start to dissolve.
Memory becomes constitution: the system inherits move-generators rather than facts alone.
Research becomes auto-research: the product studies the gap between its self-model and its observed behavior.
Product becomes membrane: onboarding, use, correction, privacy, and learning become one boundary motion.
Capital becomes metabolic rate: the organism's spend determines how fast it can test its own abstraction.
Actuation becomes embodiment: a browser, code editor, purchase order, lab protocol, legal filing, email, or robot arm is a limb when the same constitutional loop chooses and audits the action.
Compliance becomes immune system: policy has to notice novelty, record precedent, escalate uncertainty, and update the constitution when reality pushes back.
Revenue becomes energy intake: the service that helps the user funds the loop that keeps the organism current.
Identity becomes lineage: the durable product is the sequence of constitutional updates that survives model swaps, interface swaps, database migrations, and domain expansion.
The reachable domains then appear in feedback-cost order. Code comes first because tests are cheap and failures are local. Law and medicine come later because the feedback is expensive, privacy-bound, and institutionally audited. Biology comes later still because the actuator touches molecular reality and the immune system has to mature before the limb can move freely.
The remaining pieces look almost ordinary once the loop exists: accounts, permissions, tools, customers, regulated workflows, robots, labs. Each is another organ grafted onto the same constitutional circuit. The exotic part is smaller and earlier: state learning how to buy process.
AGI in this frame arrives less like a model crossing a line and more like a product discovering enough organs to keep researching itself in the world. The invention hidden by the word memory is a beautifully compressed corpus of mechanics, baked into the machine, with enough budget to test and rewrite the machine's own self-description.
